SB: Shockers Open Fall Season Saturday at Home

9/19/2013 2:46:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team will open up the fall season at C. Howard Wilkins Stadium Sat., Sept. 21. The Shockers will play a pair of games beginning with a 2 p.m. first pitch against Pratt Community College and a 4 p.m. contest against Seminole State.

Head coach Kristi Bredbenner starts her third season with a host of new faces that will see their first action in a Shocker uniform this Saturday. Along with two transfers: Cacy Williams (Emporia State) and Liz Broyles (UMKC) Wichita State has welcomed nine freshmen (Jenni Brooks, Michelle Dixon, Kayla Heath, Macklin Hitz, Ashley Johnson, Kennedy Long, Paige Luellen, Kaitlyn Malone and Kelli Spring).

Newcomers will be looking to find their roles on the team throughout the fall season as Bredbenner looks to find the most competitive lineup heading into the spring season.

Along with 11 newcomers, the Shockers have 11 returners who will also be looking to fill new roles and positions. Wichita State returns five of its top seven hitters from 2013, including the team's home run leader, Melanie Jaegers.

Going into the weekend games against Pratt and Seminole State, Bredbenner will look to experiment with different lineup combinations.

“The fall for us is all about evaluation,” Bredbenner said. “We are expecting our kids to have a lot of depth because we have 22 players so everyone is going to get an opportunity to show us what they've got.”

All fall games will be open to the public.
