WBB: Shockers Add JUCO Guard for 2013-14

WICHITA – The Wichita State University women's basketball team rounded out its 2013-14 recruiting class with the addition of guard Valerierose Agnello, who will transfer from Kishwaukee (Ill.) College, head coach Jody Adams announced today.

Agnello was a NJCAA All-America Honorable Mention selection at Kishawukee, where she served as the team captain.  The 5-foot-10 guard hails from Brookfield Central (Wis.) High School, where she was a three-time all-conference performer.

“I love her passion for the game, her work ethic, and desire to do what it takes to win,” Adams said.  “She is driven by the challenge of getting out of her box and allowing this coaching staff to take her game to another level.  The intangibles she brings in experience, leadership qualities, and as a young woman are invaluable.  I believe we will see great things ahead for this junior college all-american.”

Kishwaukee blazed through the Arrowhead Conference with a 12-0 record in 2012-13.  The Kougars also collected the Region IV regular season championship and placed sixth at the national tournament.

Agnello averaged 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists while contributing 2.3 steals and 0.8 blocks en route to earning first team all-conference and second-team all-district honors.  During conference play the sophomore averaged 22 points to lead the Arrowhead Conference.  She scored 20+ points five times, including a career-high 30 at Highland (Ill.) CC on Jan 22.

She joins Wichita State, a program built around its defense, from a school that turned in staggering defensive numbers in the Arrowhead Conference.  Kishwaukee set a school record in points allowed (50.18 ppg) her freshman year and in conference games during her sophomore year, surrendered just 33.0 ppg.  That defensive effort led the Kougars to a school-record 27 wins in 2011-12 and was nearly matched this season with 26.

The Shockers incoming class for 2013-14 now totals eight student-athletes.  Agnello joins fall signees Jamillah Bonner (Butler CC/Wichita, Kan.), Jaleesa Chapel (Dekaney HS/Spring, Texas), Moriah Dapprich (Branson High School/Branson, Mo.), Briana Jones (James Madison HS/San Antonio, Texas), Morgan Landers (Burleson High School/Burleson, Texas), Marissa Preston (Staley High School/Kansas City, Mo.), and Kayla White (East Central High School/San Antonio, Texas).

Wichita State University is coming off the program's first regular season championship, first conference tournament championship, and first trip to the NCAA Tournament as well as a school-record for victories (24).
