Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita
State extended its winning streak to three with a 5-3 victory over
Nebraska-Omaha Wednesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Zach Beringer went five innings to pick up the victory in
his first start of the season striking out eight Maverick batters. Taylor
Doggett went 3-for-4 scoring two runs to pace the Shockers at the plate.
Wichita State (7-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the
first inning beginning with Casey Gillaspie's one-out sacrifice fly to right
field plating leadoff hitter Daniel Kihle from third. Erik Harbutz followed two
batters later with an RBI single that careened off the outstretched glove of
the Nebraska-Omaha third baseman into shallow left center scoring Doggett.
Johnny Coy then scored with two outs on a wild pitch from Maverick starter Cole
Volkers.
Nebraska-Omaha's Conner Messinger two-out double down the
right field line scored Tyler Splichal from second base to narrow the Shocker
lead to 3-1.
The Shockers answered right back to extend the lead to 4-1
with Gillaspie picking up his second RBI of the game on a four-pitch bases loaded
walk scoring Tanner Kirk. Doggett scored three pitches later on a double play
off the bat of Johnny Coy to make it 5-1.
Nebraska-Omaha (0-4) picked up a run in the top of the sixth
on a bases loaded walk to Splichal, but had their comeback bid spoiled when
Shocker reliever T.J. McGreevy picked off Splichal leading off of first with
the bases still loaded before throwing a single pitch. Splichal attempted to
prolong the rundown by running to second but was tagged out by Gillaspie
trailing from first. During the rundown Alex Mortensen attempted to score from
third but was tagged out by Gillaspie at home plate after four different
Shockers touched the baseball to end the inning.
The Mavericks added one run in the top of the ninth on an
RBI single to left from pinch-hitter Brett Miller but Brandon Peterson retired
the final two batters of the game to pick up his third save of the season.
The Shockers open a three-game series Friday against
Texas-Pan American at 3 p.m. as they continue their seven-game home stand.
