MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -
Layne Greenlee's two home run day, along with complete game pitching
performances from Sloan Anderson and Katie Armagost, propelled Wichita State to
victories over Western Carolina, 4-0, and Coastal Carolina, 5-2, on day two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Against Western Carolina, Anderson was deceptive in the
circle mixing speeds and location to keep the Catamounts off balance. The
defensive effort behind her was just as impressive as the Shockers finished the
game without an error on 21 balls put in play. Anderson finished the game
facing just three batters over the minimum.
Western Carolina's Malloy Broome matched Anderson pitch for
pitch through the first five innings allowing only four base runners, but the
Shockers finally got to the Catamount starter in the sixth.
Laura Vickers two-out walk followed a Brianne Bond single to
load the bases for Greenlee with game still scoreless. The sophomore from
Denton, Texas fell behind in the count 1-2 but sat on a change-up on the next
pitch sending a charge over the fence in straightaway centerfield for a grand
slam home run providing the only runs of the game.
Anderson worked a scoreless seventh inning for her second
straight complete game shutout of the tournament improving her record to 6-2.
Katie Armagost took the ball in Saturday's second game
against Coastal Carolina and picked up right where Anderson left off. The
senior from Wichita did get a big boost from her defense in the bottom of the
first inning when the Coastal Carolina's Cacia Pierce's double into the left
centerfield gap was picked up quickly by Greenlee who fired the ball into Vandever
the shortstop who turned and fired a strike to Melanie Jaegers behind the plate
cutting down Kory Hayden attempting to score from first for the third out of
the inning. The momentum building play seemed to give life to the Shocker
dugout on a frigid evening with temperatures hovering just above 35 degrees.
In the top of the third inning Brittany Fortner and Jaegers
reached base with consecutive singles bringing Hayley Temple to the plate with
two outs. Temple proceeded to hit
a hard grounder at the Coastal Carolina shortstop that Fortner had to jump over
on her way to third base causing enough of a distraction that the ball went
right through fielders legs allowing Fortner to score the first run of the
game. Bond then stepped to the plate and capitalized on the Chanticleers' error
shooting a two-run single to right center giving the Shockers a 3-0 lead
through three innings. All three runs were unearned.
After Armagost posted two more scoreless frames in the third
and fourth inning, Bond returned to the plate in the top of the fifth and added
her third RBI of the game singled a ball at eye-level into left field to score
Vandever giving Wichita State a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth inning Greenlee sent her second home run of the
day over the fence in left field for an insurance run putting the Shockers up
5-0.
Armagost gave up a solo home run in both the sixth and
seventh inning that proved inconsequential with the players' breath clearly
visible amid rapidly decreasing temperatures. Jaegers caught a popup against
the screen behind the plate to end the game and give Wichita State its first
five-game winning streak since the 2008 season.
The Shockers will look for their sixth consecutive victory
closing out the Coastal Carolina Invitational at 8 a.m. (CST) against Albany.
