WBB: Diamond Named MVC Scholar-Athlete

3/12/2013 11:36:00 AM

WICHITA - For the second consecutive year, Jessica Diamond was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Second Team.  A senior from Houston, Texas, Diamond carries a 3.26 GPA in Psychology and leads the Shockers in scoring at 12.0 points per game.

Diamond was also second-team last season and is the first Shocker to earn a spot on the Scholar-Athlete Team in back-to-back seasons since Marcy Sudbeck earned honorable mentions in 2006-07 & 2007-08, then earned first team honors in 2008-09.

In addition to her Psychology major, Diamond minors in Sociology and Creative Writing.  On the court, Diamond leads the team in scoring and is second in steal and assists.  She has 1,397 career points to rank seventh in Wichita State history.

The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75 percent of a team's games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.

Northern Iowa's Jacqui Kalin was named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a second time.  She was joined on the first team by Karly Buer (Missouri State), Anna Munn (Indiana State), Sarah Nelson (Creighton), Taylor Whitley (Indiana State), and Katie Yohn (Bradley).
