WICHITA, Kan.- Following its team win at the Varsity
Apartments Invitational, the Wichita State Women's Track & Field team now
finds itself in the top 25.
The poll by
the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association voted the
Shockers the 23rd best team in the nation for the week of Feb. 4.
This marks the
highest ranking that any Shocker Track & Field team has held in the
USTFCCCA poll. The Shockers previous highest ranking was 25th in May
2011. WSU last reached the top 30 in the final poll of the 2012 indoor season,
when they were ranked 28th.
WSU
leapfrogged 12 teams in the national poll and made the biggest jump of any squad.
The Shocker women also rank sixth in the Midwest region.
Aliphine
Tuliamuk-Bolton, and Tanya Friesen both rank in the top 10 nationally.
Tuliamuk-Bolton posted the fifth best time in the women's 3,000m meter run.
Friesen's
record setting performance at the Varsity Apartments Invitational this past
weekend earned ninth place nationally in the pentathlon.
The Shocker
women scored 156. 17 at the Varsity Apartments Invitational to claim first
place. WSU defeated its closest competition, Texas-Arlington, by over 80
points.
Wichita State
will send the majority of its Track & Field team to Colorado Springs for a
meet at Air Force this weekend, while the Shocker distance athletes will
compete at Iowa State.
