WICHITA, Kan.- Despite a double-double from sophomore Alex
Harden, the Shockers fell to Bradley 75-55 on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch
Arena.
Harden scored 11 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and handed
out six assists to lead the Shockers. Jessica Diamond, Jazimen Gordon and
Darice Fountaine added 10 points apiece.
Katie Yohn had a double-double of her own for the Braves
with 21 points and 10 rebounds on 10-for-16 shooting. Shronda Butts had 19
points while Kelsey Budd and Catie O'Leary added 13 points apiece to the
Bradley effort.
Diamond started an early 7-0 run for Wichita State (16-7,
10-1) when she sliced through the lane for a layup. A Fountaine 3-point basket
put the Shockers up 13-6 at the 15:09 mark in the first half.
Bradley (10-12, 4-7) then went on a 10-2 run that was capped
by a Butts 3-pointer to take the lead, 16-15. The Shockers answered with a Diamond
2-point jumper and a Kelsey Jacobs drive to the basket that put Shockers back
ahead, 19-16 with 10:42 remaining in the half.
The Braves answered yet again with a 14-4 run that put them
ahead 30-23 at the 5:34 mark. One minute later, Fountaine ended a run of six
straight points from Bradley with a jumper at the free throw line that cut the
Bradley lead to 30-25.
Michaela Dapprich hit a shot from behind the arc with 1:14
remaining in the half for Wichita State, and after a Bradley free throw from
Butts, the Braves would take a 35-32 lead into halftime.
Wichita State out-shot the Braves, shooting 15-for-32
(.469), compared to Bradley's 15-for-34 (.441), but the Shockers turned the
ball over 10 times in the half, allowing 11 points off those turnovers.
The good shooting did not continue for the Shockers in the
second half however, as they only shot 7-for-28 (.250) from the field.
The Braves raced out to an early 8-0 run after halftime, to
go up 43-37 with 15:51 remaining in the game.
Wichita State cut the Braves lead to 45-42 when Dapprich hit
a jumper on the right baseline, then, on the next offensive possession for the
Shockers, Fountaine hit a 3-pointer that leveled it at 45.
Catie O'Leary hit a 3-pointer for Bradley at the 8:00 mark that sparked an 8-0 run which put the Braves up, 58-47. They then scored 17 of
the games next 25 points to give the Shockers their first loss in Missouri
Valley Conference play.
The Shocker women are back in action on Thursday, February
14 when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa for
a game against Drake. Tip is set for 7:05 p.m.
