WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State men's tennis team grabbed their first two dual match wins of the season on Friday at Crestview Country Club, defeating Newman 7-0 and Oral Roberts 6-1.
Against Newman, Ilija Cuic and Tin Ostojic Nei defeated Dos Santos and Freddy Sanchez, 8-2 and Guillermo Nicol and Tomislav Gregurovic took down Evgeniy Kim and Max Pyle, 8-4 to capture the doubles point for Wichita State. Jocelyn Devilliers and Ibian Hodgson also won in doubles play, defeating Miguel Bendito and Jeff Wherritt, 8-2.
In singles play, Gregurovic was first off the courts at the No. 4 position, defeating Max Pyle, 6-0, 6-1. Then, Devilliers defeated Miguel Bendito, 6-1, 6-0 before Hodgson clinched the match for the Shockers by taking down Jeff Wherritt, 6-1, 6-1. Nicol, Ostojic and Cuic also picked up singles victories.
The Shockers fell behind early in the next match against Oral, as they dropped the doubles point by losing two-out-of-three matches. Nicol and Gregurovic picked up Wichita State's lone doubles victory in the match, defeating Parker Allen and Cole Guy, 8-0.
Wichita State regrouped in singles play however and did not drop a set in any match. Ibian Hodgson clinched the match by defeating Braxton Bates, 6-2, 6-2.
The Shockers are next in action at the ITA Central Region Championships Oct. 17-21 in Tulsa, Okla.
