MIDLAND, Texas- The Wichita State men's tennis team
completed their first day at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday
night.
In singles play, senior Matheus Pereira got his season off
on the right foot, defeating Raphael Pfister of Texas Tech, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman
Tin Ostojic was also impressive in his first matches as Shocker, defeating Will
Stein of TCU, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and the No. 4 seed overall from Rice, Peter Frank,
6-0, 6-2.
The Shocker men also played well in doubles competition on
Friday. Matheus Pereira and Alvaro Gutierrez defeated James Hignett and Mitch
McDaniels of New Mexico, 8-5, then went on to defeat Andrew Stenger and Marc
Hermann of Nebraska, 8-3.
Tomislav Gregurovic and Guillermo Nicol won their first
round doubles match before defeating the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Rodolfo
Bustamante and Arnau Dachs of TCU, 8-5.
The only loss of the day in doubles play for the Shockers
came when Erick Reyes and Tin Ostojic fell to the No. 1 seed, Grant Ive and
Tristan Jackson of Tulsa, 8-6.
The Shockers continue play on Saturday morning.
