WBB: Shockers Add Crawford as Assistant Coach

5/22/2012 1:17:00 PM

WICHITA -Wichita State University women's basketball head coach Jody Adams named Kirk Crawford as assistant coach today.

"I am really excited to add someone with the pedigree of Kirk Crawford to our staff," Adams said.  "He has worked at numerous levels, developing an ability to teach and recruit student-athletes to be successful on and off the court."

Crawford, who has held coaching positions at Drake, Providence, Southern Mississippi and Air Force, among others, and was a volunteer assistant for the WNBA's Portland Fire, fills the vacancy left by Kristy Guffey, who accepted a position at Lee's Summit (Mo.) High School.

Last season at Drake, Crawford guided center Rachael Hackbarth to Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year honors. During his tenure at Air Force, Crawford helped coach guard Raimee Beck to two-straight all-Mountain West Conference selections and become just the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point threshold during her career.

During his four-year tenure at Southern Miss (2004-08), Crawford helped turn the Golden Eagles into one of the most successful teams in Conference USA and helped lead the team to a WNIT berth in 2008.

In addition to his collegiate experience, Crawford trains and develops NBA and WNBA players during the offseason at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

A two-sport athlete at Western State College (Colo.), Crawford earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1978. He was a multi-year letterwinner in both basketball and baseball at WSC. Crawford and his wife, Margie, have twin boys, Zachary and Nolan.
