WICHITA, Kan. — Both the Wichita
State men's and women's track & field teams remain ranked among the Midwest
Region's top 10, according to the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association rankings released Tuesday.
The
Shocker women moved up one spot to No. 6 in the region, while the Wichita State
men dropped one spot to No. 9.
Kansas
remains the top-ranked women's team in the Midwest this week, followed by
Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas State in the top five. In the men's
rankings, Nebraska is No. 1 again this week, followed by Oklahoma, Minnesota,
Iowa and Kansas State in the top five.
Texas
A&M is the nation's No. 1 men's team and LSU the top women's team in the
country this week.
The
Wichita State women moved up eight spots in the NCAA Division I National Team
Computer Rankings and broke into the nation's top 50 this week. The Shockers
are ranked No. 49 among all NCAA Division I women's programs.
According
to the USTFCCCA, the "Regional Index is determined using a similar method
as national rankings, but on a smaller scale, comparing teams versus others
within the same region. The result is a ranking that showcases squads with
better all-around team potential - a group makeup critical for conference or
similar team-scored events. A team may achieve a better regional ranking than a
counterpart that has a better national ranking."
Shocker
junior Aliphine Tuliamuk owns top-five times nationally this season in the
women's 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters on the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division I
Top-10 NCAA Seeds By Event.
The
Shockers most recently competed in the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley
Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Cessna Stadium. The
Wichita State women won back-to-back team titles, while the Shocker men
finished second in the team standings.
The
Shockers' elite student-athletes will next compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I
Track & Field West Preliminary Round May 24-26 in Austin, Texas. The NCAA Finals
will take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
