WICHITA, Kan. - The
Wichita State softball team split a pair of games with Bradley on Senior Day Saturday
afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. After dropping the first game, 9-2, the Shockers
stormed back to take game two, 8-2.
Game One
Following a pregame ceremony to honor Wichita State seniors
Holly Eckert, Hilary Fort, and Brittney Osborn the Shockers fell behind 2-0
through the first three innings. With the Shockers struggling to get their
offense going against Bradley starter Madeline Lynch-Crumrine, their short-game
defense was put to the test early and often. Bradley manufactured five runs in
the fourth inning largely due to their ability to move runners with bunts and
singles. The Braves pushed five runs across the board in the inning to take a
commanding 7-0 lead.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Melanie Jaegers and Brianne Bond
gave the Shockers life in the bottom of the inning but the momentum was
curtailed in the top of the fifth inning when the Braves answered back with two
runs of their own. The final two innings went scoreless to give Bradley the
game one victory.
Game Two
Following their humbling defeat in game one the Shockers
flipped the script in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, jumping out
to their own 7-0 lead through four innings.
Wichita State got on the scoreboard in the third inning on
Sydney Stuever's fourth home run of the season to take a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers then got RBI's from Layne Greenlee, Rachel
Milnark, Danika Miller (2), and Stuever to push the Shocker lead to 7-0.
Bradley responded with a pair of runs in the top of the
fifth inning but the Shockers were able to negate any further charge to get the
win.
Stuever added another RBI single in the sixth inning to
close out the game a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-3 with 4 RBI's. Two
more Wichita State hitters finished the game with multiple hits. Milnark also went
3-for-3 with a triple and Brianne Bond finished the game 2-for-2.
Wichita State got a quality start from Sloan Anderson in the
circle as the sophomore gave up no earned runs and only six hits in her 13th
complete game of the season.
The series is scheduled to conclude Sunday at Wilkins
Stadium at noon.
