TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -
Wichita State got a dominant pitching performance in the first game of
Saturday's doubleheader at Indiana State from junior Katie Armagost to earn a
split of the day's action.
Armagost allowed one unearned run and only four hits
in the complete game victory.
A fourth inning leadoff double by Sydney Stuever was the only
hit the Wichita State (12-33, 5-14) offense could muster through the first six
innings of game one as the Shockers struggled to find a rhythm against Indiana
State (17-26, 4-14) starter Lindsey Bessier.
That all changed in the top-of-the seventh inning as the
Shockers reeled off four runs on five hits bringing all nine batters to the
plate. Rachel Milnark lifted a one-out double down the left field line and
Hayley Temple followed with a single to right field to advance Milnark to third
base to get things started. After Temple stole second, Melanie Jaegers hit a
chopper over the outstretched arms of the Indiana State shortstop to score both
runners and give WSU a 2-0 lead. Brianne Bond kept the inning alive with a
single to the second baseman, who made a diving stop but sailed her throw over
the first baseman. Jaegers scored on the throwing error to give the Shockers a
3-0 lead. Danika Miller closed out the scoring in the seventh for Wichita State
with a sharply hit single to right field plating Bond securing a 4-0 lead.
Indiana State mounted a charge in the bottom-of-the inning
loading the bases on a single and two walks. An error by Wichita State allowed
the Sycamores to get on the scoreboard and bring the game-winning run to the
plate with bases loaded and two outs. However, Armagost remained in command
scooping a ground ball up the middle and tossing it to Erin Carney at first
base for the final out of the game.
In the second game of the doubleheader the Shockers took an
early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bond's fly ball was dropped by the
Indiana State right fielder to score Carney.
Indiana State answered back in the bottom-of-the second with
two runs and again with four runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead
highlighted by Megan Stone's leadoff home run in the third inning.
The Sycamores continued to extend their lead in the fifth
inning with a two-run homer by Bessier, making the score 8-1.
Greenlee scored on an error by the Indiana State second
baseman for the final run of the game.
The Shockers were unable to answer when opportunities
presented themselves leaving nine runners on base.
The series rubber-match will be at noon Sunday at Price
Field.
