Shockers Lose Pair in Home Opener

3/7/2012 10:12:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan.-Wichita State failed in their bid to get their first home win of the season losing both games of Wednesday's doubleheader to Loyola-Chicago.

In game one of the doubleheader Wichita State fell behind early on a leadoff home run by Rambler shortstop Lauren Arceneaux. A pair of RBI doubles in the top-of-the third inning added two runs the Loyola-Chicago lead making the score 3-0.

After five scoreless innings at the plate the Shockers finally delivered in the bottom of the sixth. Hayley Temple hit a three-run double to even the score at three on a ball that ricocheted off the centerfield fence.

The Shockers had opportunities in the late innings to push across the game-winning run but were unable to get the clutch hit they were desperately searching for.

The game went into extra innings where a couple poor fielding efforts by Wichita State allowed the Ramblers to score two runs in the top-of-the eighth inning. Unable to match the Rambler charge, the Shockers never threatened in the bottom of the frame, ending the game by a final tally of 5-3.

Game two of the doubleheader was a mirror image of the first with the Shockers falling behind early, leaving themselves an uphill battle to climb.

Trailing 3-0 headed to the bottom-of-the fourth Wichita State's bats came alive to take a 4-3 lead highlighted by a pair of RBI singles by Temple and Rachel Milnark.

From there the Shockers failed to shut down the Rambler attack allowing two runs in fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh eventually losing by a final score of 9-6.

The Shockers are next in action in Norman, Okla. where they will take on Big Ten Conference member Indiana at 3 p.m. The Shockers will play four games in Norman matching up with Indiana for another game Saturday and playing two games against Oklahoma.
