WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State baseball team won its first home game of the season, 7-1, against North Dakota on Friday afternoon.

Josh Smith earned his first win of the season. The senior from Pleasant Hill, Mo. pitched six innings, allowed one run on two hits, and struck out a career-high 11. Sophomore Tyler Coughenour went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Wichita State got on the board in the bottom of the first when Kevin Hall walked to lead off the game, then three batters later, Johnny Coy doubled to right center to score Hall and put the Shockers up 1-0.

North Dakota would tie the game in the top of the fourth when Kyle Bolander homered for North Dakota. It was the first hit allowed by pitcher Josh Smith.

It would not take long for Wichita State to take the lead again. In the bottom of the fifth, Dayne Parker doubled to left field, then reached third on a passed ball and scored when Kevin Hall grounded out to second.

The Shockers would add four more in the sixth and one more in the seventh to put away the Fighting Sioux.

Wichita State continues play on Saturday when they take on North Dakota in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
