Ragland Scores 30 in Shockers' Win at Davidson

Davidson, N.C. -- Senior Joe Ragland recorded a game-high 30 points and seven rebounds as No. 24 Wichita State beat Davidson, 91-74, Saturday in a Sears BracketBuster match-up at John Belk Arena.

The Shockers led by as many as 23 points in the second half in the win that improved Wichita State's record to 24-4 overall.

The victory also gave Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall his 300th career win.

Ragland scored 18 of his points in the second half, as the Shockers posted their highest points total since a 102-53 win against Newman Dec. 19.

Senior Toure' Murry finished with 16 points and six assists. Junior Carl Hall put up 13 points for the Missouri Valley Conference Shockers.

Davidson, which plays in the Southern Conference, fell to 20-7 overall as the two teams met for the first time. Jake Cohen scored 25 points to lead the Wildcats.

The match-up came as part of the annual BracketBusters event, which features 26 teams on the ESPN family of networks. Wichita State has played in the BracketBusters series since the 2003-04 season.

The Shockers grabbed an early 8-2 lead Saturday on a Murry jumper, but Davidson fought back to tie the game, 8-8, on a three-pointer from Cohen less than three minutes into the game.

Wichita State later grabbed a five-point edge on a three-pointer from David Kyles, 13-8.

A Nik Cochran free throw gave Davidson its first lead of the game at the 12:27 mark of the back-and-forth first half. A three-pointer from De'Mon Brooks gave Davidson another lead, 23-22, with 9:39 left in the half.

Five-straight points from Ragland later extended the Shockers to a 29-25 edge. Hall converted a three-point play with 4:06 remaining in the half for a 34-29 lead.

Davidson regained the lead once again on a Cochran three-pointer, 35-34.

A jumper and trey from Ragland built a four-point Shocker margin before a Chris Czerapowicz three-pointer cut the Wichita State lead to 39-38 at halftime.

The Shockers shot 50 percent in the first half, led by Ragland's 12 points and four rebounds. Cochran had 13 points for Davidson, followed closely by Cohen's 12 points.

Ragland was fouled on a three-point attempt early in the second half and made the three free throws that followed for a 46-40 lead.

A bucket from Kyles, followed quickly by a layup from Williams, extended Wichita State to a 60-51 lead with 12 minutes to play.

A Ragland three, assisted by Kyles, pushed the Shockers to a 15-point winning margin with 8:16 to play.

The Shockers extended to a 23-point lead, 84-61, on a jumper from Ragland.

Davidson cut the lead to 11 points on a Czerapowicz shot with 2:12 to play, but that was the last time the Wildcats would score. Ragland's bucket in the final minute closed out the scoring.

The Shockers shot 64 percent overall Saturday, making 35 of 55 field goals.

Marshall improved his record to 106-59 at WSU. He posted a record of 194-83 at Winthrop in nine seasons, and now carries a 300-142 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach.

Wichita State won its sixth-straight game, and for the 14th time in the last 15 outings.

The Shockers next return to MVC play and travel to face Illinois State at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Normal, Ill.
