WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State freshman Alex Harden matched her
season-high with 15 points and Chynna Turner added a double-double
in the Shockers' 74-46 win against Southern Illinois Friday at Charles Koch
Arena.
Turner's 12 points and team-leading 11 rebounds gave the junior her
fifth double-double of the season. Haleigh Lankster added 14 points and Jessica
Diamond and Jazimen Gordon also posted double-digit points totals in the
Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball win.
The Shockers entered the game in a three-way tie for first place in the
conference standings and improved to 16-8 overall and 10-3 in the MVC. A crowd
of 2,391 fans watched the Shockers play their annual "Pink Game."
Southern Illinois fell to 7-18 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
Cartaesha Macklin led all players with 25 points and added 11 rebounds for the
Salukis.
With the win, Shocker head coach Jody Adams moved into third place on
Wichita State's all-time wins list. She has 64 wins with the Shockers.
Southern Illinois grabbed an early 5-0 lead in the game's first minute,
as the Shockers missed their first three shots. A Lankster layup at the
17-minute mark gave Wichita State its first lead, 6-5.
Turner's layup, followed by two free throws from Gordon, pushed the
Shockers to a 10-5 advantage. The Shockers held the Salukis without a field
goal for six minutes as Wichita State built on its lead.
The Shockers took a 19-11 edge midway through the half after layups
from Harden and Diamond. The offensive surge came as part of an 8-2 Shocker
run.
The Salukis answered with six-straight points to cut the lead to two
points, but Wichita State extended back out to a 12-point lead on a Gordon
jumper late in the half.
Wichita State took a 34-24 lead into halftime and held Salukis to 24.1
percent shooting in the half. Gordon led the Shockers with eight points and
eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Macklin had 14 points for the Salukis.
A Lankster layup at the 17:56 mark of the second half extended the
Shockers to a 41-26 lead.
The winning margin grew to 18 points three minutes into the second
half.
A Lankster layup, assisted by Alicia Sanchez, pushed the Shockers to a
22-point lead midway through the half. Lankster's layup at the 1:59 mark gave
the Shockers their largest lead of the game — 32 points.
The Shockers held Southern Illinois to 29.8 percent shooting in the game.
Wichita State next hosts Evansville at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 at
Charles Koch Arena.
