WACO, Texas-
Wichita State's softball team opened their season with a pair of defeats Friday
in Waco, Texas as they fell to Iowa, 11-0, and Baylor, 5-1.
The Shockers fell behind early to Iowa, surrendering five
runs in the first inning. A tight strike zone and untimely errors proved to be
the Shockers undoing. Iowa junior pitcher Chelsey Lyon threw a two-hit shutout
for the Big-10 Conference Hawkeyes.
Wichita State shook off the first game jitters to remain
competitive with the preseason No. 7 ranked Baylor Bears entering the final
frame trailing 3-1 before giving up a pair of runs in the final inning.
Sophomore pitcher Sloan Anderson gave up three runs throwing her first career
complete game in a Shocker uniform.
Baylor junior pitcher Courtney Repka earned the victory for
Baylor also throwing a complete game giving up one unearned run on four hits.
The Shocker run came on a throwing error by the Baylor
catcher trying to catch senior Brittney Osborn stealing second. The throw ended
up at the center field wall allowing Osborn to reach home. Freshman Melanie
Jaegers went two-for-two at the plate to collect half of the Shocker hits.
Wichita continues play in Waco tomorrow with a noon contest
with Texas-Arlington. The Shockers will then take on Belmont approximately
twenty minutes following the conclusion of their game with Texas-Arlington.
