AUGUSTA, Kan. - Wichita State's Aliphine Tuliamuk won the
university/college women's 4K at the 63rd annual J.K. Gold Classic
Saturday at the RAFT Golf Course, as the Shocker men's and women's cross
country teams opened the 2011 season.
Tuliamuk, from Kapenguria, Kenya, paced the women's field of
121 participants with a winning time of 13:40.10. She finished more than 10
seconds ahead of second-place finisher Martina Tresch (13:50.69) from Kansas
State. Former Shocker Tonya Nero, who broke the course record in 2010 as a
senior, finished in third place running unattached with a time of 14:16.64.
Current Shocker Patrober Murindat finished in fifth place
overall in the university/college women's 4K with a time of 14:18.07. Wichita
State's Samantha Shukla finished ninth overall (14:52.93).
On the men's side, Marcos Bailon and Jackson Toroitich paced
the Shockers in the university/college men 6K. Bailon finished seventh overall
with a time of 19:21.15 and Toroitich finished in eighth place (19:22.76).
University of Missouri-Kansas City runner Cosmas Ayabei won,
leading the 135-man field with a time of 19:08.44. Cloud Community College's
Viktors Slesarenoks finished second (19:09.08), followed by Garden City
Community College's Amos Bowen in third (19:10.34).
More than 480 university, college and high school runners participated
in the J.K. Gold Classic's six races Saturday. Results for each race are available below.
The Shockers next compete Sat., Sept. 17 in the Woody Greeno
Invitational at Lincoln, Neb.
