WICHITA, Kan. -
Wichita State baseball student-athlete Chris O'Brien has been named a first
team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
He becomes the first Shocker to be named a first team
All-American since Rob Musgrave in 2008 and the first position player since
Kevin Hooper in 1999.
O'Brien, a junior catcher from Tulsa, Okla., earned Joe
Carter Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year honors as well as second
team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. He hit .410 with 56 runs, 100 hits, 25 doubles, 10 home runs
and 70 RBI.
He also finished the season on a 29-game hitting streak,
which ranks fifth-best in Shocker history. O'Brien is also a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award and
was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. He was also named the NCBWA District VI
Player of the Year and an All Star by College Baseball Lineup.
O'Brien becomes the 25th Shocker to be named a
first team All-American.
