Box Score WICHITA - Timely hitting and another solid starting pitching
performance helped the Shockers (23-16, 3-3) take the rubber match against
Evansville (19-14, 1-5), 9-2 on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium in front of
3,512 fans.
Brian Flynn tossed seven innings, scattered six hits and
allowed two runs with eight strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-1 on the
season. Cody Fick took the loss
for the Purple Aces to drop his record to 5-2. The right-hander went seven innings and allowed five runs
(four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Cale Elam recorded his second save of
the season for Wichita State.
Chris O'Brien continued his hot hitting going 3-for-5 with
three RBI and Johnny Coy was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI for Wichita
State. Designated hitter Preston
Springer finished 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBI for the Shocks.
Evansville scored the first run of the game, 1-0 in the
third after Chris Pearson led off with a double, advanced to third on a
groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly by Eric Stamets.
Coy tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of third with his RBI
single to score Kevin Hall.
An RBI double by Jared Baehl gave the Purple Aces the lead
back 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
Tyler Coughenour dropped down a perfect bunt to Fick to
safely reach to lead off the bottom of the fourth for the Shocks. Coughenour would come around to score
on an O'Brien single to tie the score at 2-2.
O'Brien would give the Shockers the lead 4-2 with his
two-RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Shockers had loaded the bases for the catcher with a Walker Davidson
fielder's choice, a Tyler Grimes single and Kevin Hall reached on an error by
the shortstop Stamets. WSU would
make it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly by Springer to plate Hall.
Springer hit his third home run in the series in the eighth
inning to make the lead 8-2, Wichita State and Coy followed Springer with a
solo blast to make the lead 9-2.
The Shockers will return to action Tuesday, April 19 when
they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. and
you can watch it on Kansas 22.
