WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State placed five in double figures as the Shockers rallied to beat the Braves of Bradley, 81-74, inside Charles Koch Arena Sunday afternoon.
Morgan Boyd (19 points), Haleigh Lankster (15 points), Jessica Diamond (14 points), Jazimen Gordon (11 points), and Chynna Turner (10 points) all reached double figures as the Shockers improve to 11-11 overall and 5-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State shot 55.6 percent from the field and a scorching 46.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Bradley (11-11, 4-7) was led in scoring by MacKenzie Westcott with 24 points and seven rebounds. The Braves struggled from the field shooting 37 percent, but kept themselves in the game by knocking down 29 of 36 free throws. Bradley shot 21 more free throws than the Shockers. The Braves made more free throws (29) in the game than they did field goals (20).
After out-rebounding the Braves in the first half, the Shocks lost the battle on the boards, 34-29. WSU was led on the boards by Jazmine Gordon with seven rebounds and Raisa Taylor and Katie Yohn led the Braves with eight.
Wichita State's bench outscored Bradley's, 35-12, behind the efforts of Boyd and Gordon. Boyd went 6-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-6 from behind the arc to score her 19-points.
Behind the efforts of Breanna Dawkins, the Shockers took an
early 5-4 lead into the first media timeout of the half. Dawkins hit her first jumper of the
game from the right corner and then went coast-to-coast to push the Shockers
ahead 5-4.
Wichita State went on an 11-0 run and held the Braves to one
field in the opening seven minutes of the game. Boyd knocked a three-pointer from the top of the key,
Diamond hit a jumper from the elbow, and Lankster went coast-to-coast with a
steal and a lay-up to put the Shockers in front, 12-4. Bradley ended the Shockers' run with a
jumper from Latasha Hollingshed with a little over twelve minutes left in the
first half. Wichita State took a
16-12 lead into the second media timeout of the half after another Lankster
drive to the basket.
The Shockers' went on a 7-0 run and took their first double-digit
lead of the game, 25-13, off a 3-pointer from Alicia Sanchez, a strong post-up
down low from Gordon, and another pull-up jumper from Sanchez.
A three-pointer from Bradley's Hannah Muegge made the score
25-18 and ended the Braves scoring drought and as it was their first field goal
in over five minutes of play. Diamond knocked down her second jumper of the
game and extended the lead back out to 31-22 with 3:17 left to play in the
half.
The Shockers traded baskets with the Braves for the
remainder of the half and took a 39-30 lead into the half time break. WSU was
led in scoring by Diamond who had nine first half points off of 4-four-8
shooting from the field. Boyd and
Gordon both chipped in eight points apiece. Bradley was led in scoring by Westcott with seven
points.
The Braves struggled from the field shooting 33.3 percent
and only knocking down 10 field goals.
Free throws kept them in the game as they went to the charity stripe 12
times in the first half and made nine of them. Wichita State shot 56.7 percent from the field, including
37.5 percent from behind the arc.
The Shockers, however, only made it to the free throw line four times in the
first half, knocking down two of them.
Wichita State outrebounded the Braves 21-14, and were led on
the boards by Gordon who pulled down five first half rebounds. Westcott and Raisa Taylor led Bradley
with five rebounds each. Wichita
State's bench out-scored Bradley's 21-6, and the Shockers scored 10 points off
of turnovers in the first half.
It was a battle of runs to start the second half. Bradley came out of the gate first with a 4-0 run behind four-straight free throws from Westcott and
Katie Yohn. Wichita State then
answered right back with a 4-0 run behind the effort from Chynna Turner, who
knocked down back-to-back baskets down low giving the Shockers a 43-37
advantage.
Bradley went on a 5-0 run with free throws from Aly Spinas-Valainis
and another 3-pointer from Yohn to get within two, 44-42, but Gordon ended the
run with a strong move in the paint.
Westcott brought the Braves within one, 46-45, by knocking down a
3-pointer in the left corner with 14:29 left in the game. Gordon knocked down one free throw, but
Bradley evened the score at 47-47 with another basket from Westcott.
Lankster regained the Shocker lead, 50-47, drilling a
3-pointer in the left corner.
Westcott knocked down two more free throws, and then a steal and layup
from Raisa Taylor gave the Braves their first lead of the second half,
51-50. The Braves last led 4-3
early in the first half. After
back-and-forth action, the score was all even, 54-54, going into the
twelve-minute media timeout.
Wichita State went on a 7-0 coming out of the media timeout
pushing the lead out to 61-54, but Spinas-Valainis stopped the run with two
free throws for Bradley. Boyd
answered right back with her third 3-pointer of the game as the Shockers went
ahead 64-56. The Shockers regained a double-digit lead, 66-56, with a driving
attack from Boyd with a little over eight minutes left to play in the game.
Lankster brought the fans inside Charles Koch Arena to their
feet with a sweeping drive to the basket that advanced the Shocks to a 71-62
lead with 4:41 left to play in the game. Westcott brought the Braves within
four, 71-67, knocking down her second 3-pointer of the game. Bradley got within
two, 71-69, with two more from free throws from Taylor.
Boyd knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the game and gave
the Shockers a 74-70 lead with a little over one minute left to play in the
half. Dawkins made it 76-70 with
two free throws from the charity stripe. Spinas-Valainis made it a four-point game with exactly one
minute left in the half. Turner
knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to seal the deal for Wichita State
with 31-seconds left in the game.
The Shockers went on to win 81-74 over the Braves of
Bradley.
The Wichita State Shockers are on the road for the next two
games as they travel to take on the Illinois State/Indiana State road
swing. WSU's first stop is in
Normal, Ill. on Thurs., Feb. 10 as their first match-up is against Illinois
State, with tip-off set for 7:05 p.m.
