Wichita, Kan. - The Wichita State Shockers (13-13, 7-8)
defeated the Creighton Bluejays (18-9, 12-4), 60-51 in front of 1,616 fans at
Charles Koch Arena on Friday night.
Haleigh Lankster led the Shocks with 20 points. Sam Schuett paced the Bluejays with 19
points.
Lankster scored six straight points, the last on two free
throws to take the lead 50-46 with 2:29 left in the game and the Shockers held
off the Jays to break an 11-game losing streak to Creighton. Wichita State used pressure defense to
force 25 Creighton turnovers and outmuscled the Jays in the paint, 34-18.
Creighton opened the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the
deficit to 32-31. The Shockers
responded with a 6-3 run of their own to take a 38-34 lead at the 11:43 mark in
the game. Creighton answered with
a 10-4 run to take a 44-42 advantage but two free throws by Jessica Diamond tied the game
at 44 at the 5:40 mark.
Jazimen Gordon scored six points off the bench to help the
Shockers jump out to a 12-6 lead to start the game.
Wichita State forced 13 Creighton turnovers in the first
half and did a good job protecting the basketball with only six turnovers.
Gordon led the Shockers with 10 points at halftime and Kelsey
Woodward led Creighton with seven points.
Wichita State led at halftime 28-23.
Gordon had career high 17 points for Wichita State.
Sunday's game against Drake is the final regular season home
game for Wichita State. WSU will
honor its lone senior, Morgan Boyd prior to the 2:05 p.m. game.
