WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State starting pitcher Charlie Lowell threw five shutout innings, striking out nine batters without allowing a hit in the Shockers 15-0 win against North Dakota Friday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

With actual temperatures in the mid-20s, and wind chill temperatures in the teens, the two baseball teams opened a non-conference three-game series.

Junior Lowell's 15 strikeouts tied a career high as he improved to 2-0 this season.

Senior first baseman Preston Springer hit 4-for-5, batted in four runs and scored twice to lead the Shockers, who improved to 5-0 overall. Third baseman Erik Harbutz picked up two hits, three RBI and scored twice.

North Dakota dropped to 0-1 in its first game of the season.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Shockers grabbed a 2-0 lead. Preston Springer hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, advancing Tyler Grimes and scoring Kevin Hall. Johnny Coy later hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Grimes.

Hall walked in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded, sending Erik Harbutz home on the play for a 3-0 Wichita State lead.

Wichita State took a 7-0 lead with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. Harbutz singled through the left side, scoring Coy and Springer. Chris O'Brien scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. With two outs and the based loaded, Davidson walked, scoring Harbutz for a 7-0 edge.

The Shockers added four more runs in the sixth inning. Springer singled to left center in the sixth inning, and Grimes scored from second base for an 8-0 lead. O'Brien singled to first base and Springer scored. Harbutz later singled to first base, scoring Coy. O'Brien scored on a wild pitch with two outs for an 11-0 lead.

Grimes scored on Springer's single to second base in the seventh inning. Wichita State added three additional runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. game Saturday and concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Eck Stadium.
