SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The Wichita State softball team fell to 1-3 on the season as Western Kentucky (3-2) shutout the Shockers, 5-0, in the morning game of the last day of the Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic.
It was a pitchers duel at Campus Diamond between WSU and WKU to start the game. Senior pitcher Brianna Smet (1-1) got the start in the circle for the Shockers. Through four innings of play, Smet held the Hilltoppers to just two hits and recorded two strikeouts, while keeping them scoreless. Kimberly Wagner started the game for Western Kentucky and didn't give up one run to the Shockers. She limited the Shocks to four hits and picked up seven strikeouts.
Western Kentucky got on the scoreboard first, scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning off of two errors in the infield. Amanda Thomas scored with two outs in the inning off of a throwing error by Sammie Shook. The Hilltoppers picked up four more runs in the sixth inning. They scored the runs off of three hits and one error in the infield.
Smet went 5.2 innings giving up five runs off of five hits. she picked up four strikeouts on the game. Wagner got the win for the Hilltoppers, shutouting the Shockers and holding them to four hits on the game. She recorded seven strikeouts.
Rachel Milnark and Brittney Osborn both led the Shockers at the plate with two hits each.
