Shockers Defeat Seattle, 7-2, in Game One of Two

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Nine different Shockers recorded a hit as Wichita State defeated Seattle University, 7-2, in its first game of the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif.

WSU's bats were on fire in the first game of two as they scored seven runs off of 14 hits.  Heather Gerritse led the Shocks with 3 hits, 2 RBI, and one double in four at bats. Holy Eckert scored one run, had two hits, including two doubles, and one RBI in four at bats. Meghan Boston played her first game in a Shocker uniform going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and scoring one run.

Brianna Smet got the start and the win, going 5.2 innings, giving up four hits, one run, and recording seven strikeouts.

The Shockers came out and took control of the game early scoring one run in the top of the first inning.  Kiersten Dixon led off with a double to left field and Heather Gerritse brought her home with a single to right field. Wichita State took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

WSU kept the action going in the second inning. Meghan Boston started things off with a double to left field and Sammie Shook followed that up with a double of her own.  Brittney Obsorn brought both of them home with a line drive up the middle.  Rachel Milnark brought in the third run of inning, scoring Osborn with a hit right over short.

The Shocks' bats continued to stay hot in the third inning. Holly Eckert doubled down the left field line and then scored off of a Meghan Boston single to left center.  Hayley Temple then scored as Osborn lined one right back up the middle.  The Shockers claimed a 6-0 lead at the end of three innings.

The Shockers proved they were ready to play by continuing the scoring trend in the top of the fourth.  Jamie Hull doubled with a rocket to the fence in left center. She advanced to third on an illegal pitch and then came home to score after Gerritse hit a long fly to center field.  Seattle University scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after Allegra Wilde tripled to center field and then advanced home on a legal pitch.
