TULSA,
Okla. - The Wichita State Shockers beat long-time rival Tulsa
University, 77-67, Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Shockers (6-2) had six players
score in double figures, including all five starters. Toure' Murry led the way
with 17 points, and Garrett Stutz added 15 points and seven rebounds. Carl
Hall, Joe Ragland and Ben Smith all tallied 11 points, and David Kyles added
10.
Tulsa (4-6) was led by junior guard Scottie
Harrelson and sophomore guard Jordan Clarkson, who each scored 18 points.
Haralson was 6-for-10 from behind the three-point line, and Clarkson nailed
three trey's and ended the game 6-for-16 from the field.
Sophomore guard Tim Peete added 12
points and senior center Steven Hidlet contributed 11 points, four assists and
four blocks.
Tulsa shot 44 percent from the field on
22-for-50 shooting, and the Golden Hurricane drained 10-of-19 from behind the
three-point line (53 percent). TU was 13-for-23 from the free-throw line (57
percent).
Wichita State shot 52 percent from the
field (24-for-46), 46 percent from behind the arc (6-for-13) and 82 percent
from the charity stripe (23-for-28).
The two teams fought for control in the
early going, and neither team held more than a four-point advantage until the
4:07 mark of the opening half, when Clarkson drained a three to hand the home
side a 36-31 advantage.
Peete drilled a trey on the next
possession to push TU ahead 39-31, and Wichita State ended the half on a 6-2
run to trail the Golden Hurricane 41-37 entering the break.
Tulsa was able to push its lead to
eight at 51-43 early in the second, but WSU mounted a quick comeback to take
the lead at 55-54 with 10:20 to play.
TU regained
the lead two minutes later on the strength of a pair of free throws from Peete,
but Murry made a layup on WSU's next possession, and the Shockers ran away with
the game in the final seven minutes as the home team went cold from the field.
Wichita State will return home to
Charles Koch Arena this Saturday to host the Utah State Aggies. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
