Box Score Carbondale, Ill. - Wichita State improved to 5-0 in Missouri Valley Conference road games
with a 74-64 win at Southern Illinois Wednesday at SIU Arena.
Several Shockers reached individual milestones in the men's basketball win,
including Toure' Murry exceeding 1,000 career points by scoring 11 points
Wednesday. J.T. Durley posted a
season-high 19 points to lead all scorers and Gabe Blair scored a career-high
18 points.
Wichita State improved to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play while
the Salukis fell to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in Valley play. Mamadou
Seck and Gene Teague led Southern Illinois with 14 points each.
Murry entered the game with 993 career points and became the second
Shocker player this season - and 40th in WSU history - to reach the
1,000-career-points milestone. Durley
reached the mark earlier this season. Murry also grabbed five rebounds
Wednesday.
A three-pointer
from David Kyles, who went on to score 13 points, gave the Shockers a 15-13
edge.
Aaron Ellis' two free throws at the 9:58 mark pushed the Shockers ahead,
19-18, but the Salukis responded with a 12-4 run to open up the game and grab a
32-23 lead.
A Kyles' three-pointer with 1:24 on the clock ended a stretch of more
than 4 ½ minutes without a Shocker field goal, 40-29.
A fast-break layup from Blair cut the Salukis' lead to eight points,
40-32, right before halftime.
Southern Illinois' Teague led all players with 11 points in the first
half, and added three rebounds as the Salukis shot 65.2 percent in the half.
Klyes and Blair each scored eight points to lead Wichita State in the
first half. Blair and Murry led the Shockers with three rebounds each, as
Wichita State shot 48.1 percent in the half. The Shockers had a slight, 12-11,
edge in rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
The Shockers opened the second half on a 10-0 run that included two free
throws from Durley and field goals from Murry, Blair and two from Durley, to take
a 42-40 lead with about 15:40 on the clock.
Free throws from Southern Illinois' Mykel Cleveland tied the game, 42-42,
and gave the Salukis their first points of the second half.
Southern Illinois' first field goal of the second half came at the 11:36
mark from Seck
to give the Salukis a 47-46 edge. Seven of Illinois State's first 11 points of the
second half came on free throws through the first 12 minutes.
Another Kyles' three-pointer with just under six minutes to go boosted
the Shockers to their largest lead to that point, 62-55.
The Shockers continued to build on that lead down the stretch, with Blair
posting Wichita State's final six points to push the lead to 10 points.
Wichita State shot 27-for-53 overall and Southern Illinois shot 23-for-44.
The Salukis outrebounded the Shockers, 30-25. Wichita State forced 17 Saluki
turnovers and committed five.
The Shockers next host Bradley at 1:05
p.m. Saturday at Charles Koch Arena in the second meeting between the teams
this season.
