WICHITA -- Jessica Diamond had a season-high 19 points as the Wichita State University women's basketball team took control of the game early and went on to defeat Indiana State 73-56 Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena.
The win pushes the Shockers record to an even 8-8 on the season and 2-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State falls to 8-7 on the year, 2-2 in the Valley.
Diamond shot 7-for-13 from the floor and had six rebounds and five assists for WSU. Morgan Boyd added another 12 points while Chynna Turner and Jazimen Gordon contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Michelle Price had a team best eight rebounds.
Kelsie Cooley had 16 points for Indiana State.
The Shockers jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the first media timeout as WSU shot an even 50 percent (6-for-12) in the first five minutes of the contest. The Sycamores matched that intensity, shooting 60 percent (3-for-5) in the same time frame to keep the contest close.
Six turnovers by the Sycamores aided the Shockers in building a 10-point cushion (19-9) midway through the first half. Gordon poured in a team-high six points at that point with three boards while Diamond added another five points.
Diamond continued her torrid shooting throughout the first half as she dropped in 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. The Shockers starting point-guard also had three rebounds and two assists in the first half. Price came off the bench to add another five points and five rebounds.
Wichita State turned the ball over only four times in the first half compared to eight for the Sycamores.
Cooley led the Sycamores with 10 points at the half.
The Shockers, who were up 39-28 at the half, continued to stretch their lead following the break as WSU went up 14 (46-32) five minutes into the second frame. The WSU defense stymied the ISU offense as the Sycamores went over eight minutes without a field goal before a Brittany Schoen three-pointer made the score 58-41 (9:17 remaining).
WSU cruised from there as the Shockers scored over 70 points for the sixth time this season.
Illinois State is next up for the Shockers as the Redbirds invade Charles Koch Arena on Sunday, Jan. 16, in a MVC showdown. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m.
