WICHITA - Wichita State's women's tennis teams won the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference tennis Championships, against the second-seeded Illinois State, 4-1.
Just a week after earning his first regular-season title as a head coach, Colin Foster and his Shockers flew through the MVC Tournament en route to winning their second-consecutive tournament championship.
Illinois State put itself in a position to win the doubles point when the Redbirds No. 3 all-conference doubles duo of Carmen Peters and Hannah Esker bumped off Lily Wakim and Delia Damaschin, 8-4.
Wichita State came roaring back in the No. 1 and 2 spot to take the 1-0 lead with the doubles win. Senior Stephanie Dalmacio and sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto made quick work of Franziska Steinhardt and Julia Zubkova in the No. 1 match, 8-2. Shocker seniors Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu sealed the point against Natalia Lech and Ariane Maack in the No. 2 position, 8-4.
Esker quickly tied the match in the No. 6 position against Wakim, winning 6-0, 6-0. It was the last match the Redbirds won on Sunday.
Doing work, Dalmacio ran past Steinhardt, 6-1, 6-3, to take the lead while Damaschin followed close behind in the No. 4 position, taking down Lech, 6-4, 6-2, to put the title in sight.
Stepping up as she's known for doing with the Shockers, nationally-ranked No. 48 Budiharto sealed the Shockers' championship with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Illinois State's Aniko Kiss in the No. 1 position.
The Shockers will host a watch party for the NCAA Team Tennis Championship selection show on Tuesday, May 4. A time and place will be announced.
