WICHITA - Wichita State women's tennis team defeated the Denver Pioneers in commanding fashion on Sunday, earning their first sweep of the season with the 7-0 victory.
The Shockers started the day with another first, playing host to the Pioneers at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex for the first time this season. A cool, cloudy day contrasted the Shockers red hot play on Sunday afternoon.
"Everyone came out with good energy and intensity," Head Coach
Colin Foster said. "We had the opportunity to play another highly talented team and we handled it well. We executed well and were able to win."
Rolling with Foster's tweaks to the doubles lineup, senior
Florentina Hanisch and sophomore
Lily Wakim teamed up for the first time this season to beat Lorinda Boothman and Mikele Smith, 8-2. Sophomore
Lutfiana Budiharto and senior
Lenore Lazaroiu also partnered up for the first time to clinch the doubles point by knocking off Julia Bauregger and Emma Isberg, 8-5.
The nationally-ranked No. 59 Shocker doubles tandem of senior
Stephanie Dalmacio and sophomore
Delia Damaschin suffered the only doubles loss, 8-7 (6) to Denver's Sophia Bergner and Ute Schnoy.
In singles play, Hanisch busted through a slight slump as of late to take down Isberg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Shocks a 2-0 lead they would only continue to build upon. No. 39 Budiharto followed her senior's effort by the exact same margin in the No. 1 match against Schnoy, 6-3, 6-2.
Damaschin made it official when she bumped off Boothman, Denver's fourth spot in the lineup, 6-4, 6-3. Dalmacio endured through an epic tie breaker in the first set to win the No. 2 match, 7-6 (10), 6-2.
After stepping up to fill a large role during Budiharto's injury early this season, sophomore
Lily Wakim has battled constant adversity in the No. 6 spot of the Shocker lineup. On Sunday, Wakim earned her first singles win of the season. She took on Denver's Mikele Smith and shook off a second-set loss to win, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
"I'm really proud of Lily," Foster said. "She hit a bit of a rough patch in the second set and was able to regain her composure and get the win."
The sweep came down to one of the Shockers' three seniors, who came through again.
Lenore Lazaroiu downed Sophia Bergner in No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3 to seal the 7-0 win.
Wichita State will stay at home for one more match before heading to California for spring break. The Shockers will play host to Rice on March 12 at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
