No. 54 Hawkeyes Halt Shocks, 5-2

INDIAN WELLS. Calif. - The Shockers matched up well against the No. 54 Iowa Hawkeyes, their first opponent at the Indian Wells Tournament but couldn't get the win, falling Friday, 5-2.

"We were two very even teams," head coach Brad Louderback said. "That's why it was very disappointing we couldn't come away with the win."

The momentum was with the Shockers (8-4) after they clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions to start the match. At the No. 1 position, redshirt freshman Sven Kasper and freshman Valentin Mihai took down Will Vasos and Tommy McGeorge, 8-2. Last season's No. 1 doubles duo, juniors Adrian Chermaci and Vlad Marinescu won at the No. 2 spot against Marc Bruche and Tom Mroziewicz, 8-5 to seal the doubles point.

Garret Dunn and Reinoud Haal nabbed the Hawkeyes' only win of doubles competition in the No. 3 match against senior Jonathan Obrist and sophomore David Cavalcanti, 8-5.

"We had the momentum after winning doubles," Louderback said. "It was disappointing that we had so much energy and then we came out flat in singles."

Sophomore David Cavalcanti moved his singles record to 8-4 against McGeorge in the No. 5 match on Friday, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-6. Unfortunately for the Shocks, the match had been decided before the conclusion of Cavalcanti's match. That's the only singles win they would earn, however, as the Hawkeyes swung the momentum their way early into singles competition.

Junior Adrian Chermaci suffered just his second loss of the spring when he fell to Vasos in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2. Kasper and Marinescu each dropped their matches at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.

Mihai couldn't hold off Haal, who defeated the Shocker rookie, 6-4, 6-4. Obrist put up a fight, taking Austen Kauss to three sets, but lost,6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The Shockers are in action again on Sunday when they stay in California to take on Pacific. First serve is set for 1 pm PT/3 pm CT.
