WICHITA - The Shockers notched their first premier win of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating the No. 31 Rice Owls, 4-3.

With the benefit of familiar courts on Wichita State's side, the Shockers locked down the doubles point and won at the No. 1, 3 and 4 singles positions at Wichita Country Club for their first win over a ranked opponent in 2010.

"We did a great job of coming out focused and really battled for every single point and every single ball," Head coach Colin Foster said. "To beat a high quality team like Rice you have to earn everything, they are not going to give it to you."

WSU got on the board first, notching wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. After dropping the first match in the No. 3 spot, 8-4. The Shockers bounced back when sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto and senior Lenore Lazaroiu knocked off Jessica Jackson and Alex Rasch in the No. 2 match, 8-6. Senior Stephanie Dalmacio and sophomore Delia Damaschin won an epic match in the top spot over Julie Chao and Ana Guzman, 9-7.

With the doubles point secured, the Shocks brought their focus and determination into singles play. They strengthened their lead when Lazaroiu won at the at No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-4. Rice started its comeback attempt when Dalmacio couldn't hold off Chao at the No. 2 spot, falling 6-2, 6-4. The Shocks got a clutch win from Damaschin when she bested Guzman in a tough No. 4 match up, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Doing what she's known for, No. 39 Budiharto sealed the match with her 6-2, 7-5 win against Rebekka Hanle. Daniella Trigo defeated sophomore Lily Wakim 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 match. Senior Florentina Hanisch gave Rebecca Lin a fight in the No. 5 match but fell short 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 to wrap up the match.

"The ladies throughout the week of practice and during the match did the work necessary to earn this win."

The Shockers will look to continue Friday's momentum when they travel to California over spring break.
