Shocks Tame Tigers, 7-0

WICHITA - The Shocker men's tennis team continued its dominance in cold-weather conditions, winning their fourth chilly home match against Cowley College on Thursday, 7-0.

Ranked No. 5 by the ITA in NJCAA competition, the Tigers of Cowley College brought tough competition along to the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The Tigers took one doubles match and forced super tiebreak sets in two singles matches to provide a good test for the Shockers.

Wichita State (8-3) was up to the challenge, sweeping the match in two-and-a-half hours. A reunited lineup got things started in doubles competition. Senior Jonathan Obrist and sophomore David Cavalcanti notched the first Shocker victory against Roger White and Alex Dickinson in the No. 3 match, 8-2.  Teamed up again for the first time this season, juniors Adrian Chermaci and Vlad Marinescu took care of Felipe Pimenta and Renato Mendes, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot to seal the doubles point.

Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Joan Valls nabbed the Tigers' only win of the afternoon, 8-5, when they took down freshmen Valentin Mihai and Sven Kasper when the pair teamed up for the first time this season at the No. 1 spot.

In singles action, Chermaci went back to his winning ways against Tom Gibaud at the No. 5 position to move his record to 10-1 on the season. Freshman Matheus Pereira followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Marinescu sealed the match when he won in convincing fashion over Valls.

With the victory secured, the Shocks still had to fend off the resilient Tigers. In both the No. 1 and 3 matches, Cavalcanti and Mihai used the super tiebreak in lieu of the third set to decide their matches. Cavalcanti nailed down the No. 1 victory, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 against Bruce-Burgess while Mihai stopped White by the exact same score.

Kasper wrapped up the match with the 6-4, 6-4 victory against Pimenta, 6-4, 6-4 to complete the sweep.

The Shocks are in action again during spring break when they travel to California. They'll take on Iowa first on March 19.
