FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Wichita State finished its weekend road trip with a split as the Shocks lost a tough match to nationally-ranked Arkansas on Sunday, 6-1.
After picking up a win in their season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette, the Shockers matched up against No. 51 Arkansas on the Razorbacks' home courts.
"Today we just had to have everything working right to get a win," Head coach Brad Louderback said. "i told them we didn't have room for any mental or physical errors and we had both. They were as good as I thought they'd be. They are a tough scrappy team and they were better than us today."
The Shocks fell behind after losing the doubles point. Chris Nott and Dmitry Lebedev got the Razorbacks rolling with an 8-4 victory against junior Vlad Marinescu and redshirt freshman Sven Kasper in the No. 1 match.
The freshman duo of Valentin Mihai and Matheus Pereira fell in the No. 2 spot to Matt Hogan and Matt Walters, 8-4, sealing the doubles point. Sophomore David Cavalcanti and senior Jonathan Obrist battled in the No. 3 spot but fell, 8-6.
With the early lead, Arkansas continued to get its work done. Nott took care of Marinescu in straight sets in the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-2. Mihai fell next to Lebedev in the No. 2 position, 6-0, 6-3.
Gregoire Lehmann clinched the match when he defeated Cavalcanti at the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-2. Obrist came out for his first singles match of the season, and although he put up a battling effort, he fell to Walters in the No. 6 match, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
Junior Adrian Chermaci hung on in the final match of the afternoon to knock off Nikolas Zogai, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
