No. 65 BYU Powers Past No. 74 Shocks, 6-1

PROVO, Utah - PROVO, Utah - No. 75 Wichita State ran into a team ready for a home match on Thursday afternoon, falling to No. 67 BYU, 6-1.

Victims of three-straight road matches all against teams ranked in the top 25, the Cougars of BYU returned home on a mission to change their luck. That's exactly what they did.

"We got beat by a team that was really clicking today," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "Certainly nothing to be ashamed of to come up short today. We're excited to compete again tomorrow."

Playing for the first time as a doubles tandem, senior Stephanie Dalmacio and sophomore Delia Damaschin defeated the nationally-ranked No. 18 BYU duo of McCall Jones and Megan Price, 8-5. Unfortunately for the Shockers, they dropped the next two doubles matches to surrender the point to the Cougars.

"Delia and Steph beat one of the better doubles teams in the nation in their first match together," Foster said. "That says a lot about how well Steph is playing and how much improvement Delia has made in her doubles game."

Seniors Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu couldn't hold off Romina Nedakovic and Kristina Doerr in the No. 2 match, 8-4. In the No. 3 slot, Chie Hayasaka and Elle Carney overpowered the less experienced Shocker duo as sophomore Lily Wakim and freshman Iasmine Carpen fell, 8-0.

In singles play, Damaschin battled to pick up the 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 victory against Hayasaka in the No. 3 position.

With No. 28 singles player sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto still unable to compete, the Shockers struggled against a strong Cougar lineup. Ranked No. 54 nationally, Jones defeated Dalmacio in the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-2.

Fellow seniors Lazaroiu and Hanisch also fell in straight sets to Doerr and Price, respectively. Wakim played tough in the No. 5 spot, but was taken down by Nedakovic, 6-3, 6-1. Liza Ehova defeated Carpen 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.

The Shocks set out for Salt Lake City tonight to take on No. 63 Utah on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 2 pm.
