MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Shocker women's tennis team made it two in a row over Big 12 in-state rival Kansas State, when they defeated the Wildcats for the second time in as many seasons on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
"We continue to compete at an extremely high level," head coach Colin Foster said. "We played a very solid team today at their home courts and even when we weren't playing our best tennis our ladies found ways to keep themselves in the fight."
Although the Shocks (3-5) picked up the first win at the No. 2 doubles position, Kansas State (3-3) won the doubles point. The Wildcats received doubles wins from its number one and three tandems. The duo of Antea Huljev and Nina Sertic won for the fifth straight time with an 8-6 decision over sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto and senior Stephanie Dalmacio. Maryna Chumak and Carmen Borau Ramos were able to top sophomores Lily Wakim and Delia Demaschin, 8-3 en route to picking up the doubles point.
Seniors Lenore Lazaroiu and Florentina Hanisch kept the Wildcats from sweeping the doubles point when they topped Karla Bonacic and Petra Chuda, 8-3.
Damaschin made quick work of Chumak, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot to clinch the match for the Shockers. In the meantime, Lazaroiu worked on a straight-set victory as well. Lazaroiu's came at the hands of Gomez-Aleman, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Budiharto hung on to take the three-set match over Huljev, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Dalmacio hung on to win at number two singles with another three-set win, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3.
In singles action, the Wildcats picked up their wins from Borau Ramos
and Chuda. Borau Ramos won with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Wakim at the
No. 6 position. In the meantime, Hanisch couldn't fight off Chuda in
the No. 5 match who won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
"In the end we were able to get it done," Foster said. "It was a great effort all around."
