WICHITA - Wichita State's men's tennis team took advantage of their first outside match of the season, sweeping the Bethany Swedes on Friday afternoon, 7-0.

More than a month into their season, the Shockers finally took the court at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The 50-plus degree weather provided a great tennis setting for the Shockers' commanding victory.

"It was a beautiful day to play outdoors," graduate assistant coach Boris Gubic said. "That was a great effort by our guys and everyone did as well as we expected them to."

The Shockers took the early lead by capturing the doubles point. Senior Jonathan Obrist and sophomore David Cavalcanti started the afternoon with the quick 8-1 victory against Bethany's Kody Koester and Jeff Caleb, 8-1.

Junior Vlad Marinescu rested during singles competition but teamed up with redshirt freshman Sven Kasper to defeat Fernando Baiva and Derek Watson, 8-3. The freshman tandem of Valentin Mihai and Matheus Pereia won by the same margin against Jack Schoeman and Will Wiseman.

In singles competition the Shockers worked diligently against the Swedes, winning each match in straight sets. Obrist didn't surrender a game to Koester in the No. 4 match winning, 6-0, 6-0.

In the No. 1 match, Kasper faced defeated Shane Haggins, 6-0, 6-2 while Mihai knocked off Schoeman in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-1. Staying hot, Pereira overwhelmed Baiva at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.

Junior Adrian Chermaci moved to 7-0 in singles competition when he toppled Wiseman, 6-3, 6-0. Cavalcanti wrapped up the Shocker lineup in the No. 6 position, defeating Watson, 6-2, 6-1.

The Shockers are in action again on Saturday when the Washburn Ichabods head to Wichita. First serve is set for noon.
