TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Wichita State (13-11, 5-8) fell behind early thanks to a 20-4 Indiana State (12-11, 3-9) run and never recovered, falling, 81-59, Sunday afternoon at the Hulman Center.
Sheena Johnson led WSU with 16 points, while Kelsey Luna led INS with a game-high 24 points.
Chynna Turner and
Jazimen Gordon reached double figures for the Shockers, finishing with 11 points each.
The Sycamores started hot, hitting their first three shots to take a 7-0 lead and force head coach Jody Adams to burn a timeout. Whatever was said in the huddle seemed to work as the Shockers responded with an 11-2 run, capped by a
Jazimen Gordon layup, to eliminate the deficit and take a 11-9 lead.
But INS started to heat up again from the floor, going on an 26-4 run over the next 8:39 to take control of the game. Deja Mattox fueled the Sycamore run with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
A layup by Luna gave INS its largest lead of the half, 38-17, with three minutes to play in the half. The Shockers cut into the Sycamore lead at the charity-stripe, but trailed 42-25 heading into halftime.
The teams traded baskets to start the second half but INS extended its lead at the free throw line. WSU found itself in foul trouble in the early minutes of the half, committing eight fouls in the first seven minutes.
Johnson led the comeback effort, scoring six points on three jumpers as part of an 8-0 WSU run. But the Sycamores came right back with an 10-0 run of their own to take their largest lead of the game, 69-42, with 10 minutes to play in the game.
WSU couldn't put together another run despite holding INS to XX-precent shooting in the second half. The Sycamores iced the game away at the free-throw line, hitting 19-of-28 for the game, and took an 81-59 win.
The Shockers return home to host Missouri State on Sat., Feb. 20 at 2:05 p.m. It will be the WBCA annual Pink Zone game to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Kay Yow Foundation. Fans who wear pink will get a general admission ticket for just $5.
