WICHITA - Wichita State's men's tennis team kept its undefeated streak against Oral Roberts alive as the Shocks won their home opener against the Golden Eagles at Genesis Health Club on Friday, 7-0.
The Shockers pushed their series record against ORU to a commanding 19-0 record using quick matches in the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles positions to put the match away early, surrendering just one set in six matches.
Wichita State started the morning by clinching the doubles point, winning in the No. 2 and 3 positions. Senior Jonathan Obrist and sophomore David Cavalcanti made quick work of Carlos Salazar and Dario Beslic, 8-1. In the No. 2 spot, the freshman duo of Matheus Pereira and Valentin Mihai took down Dmitry Suslov and Matthew Tansil, 8-3. Igor Sobolta and Mikhail Trukshanin won the only doubles match for the Golden Eagles, 8-6, against junior Vlad Marinescu and redshirt freshman Sven Kasper.
With a 1-0 lead secured, the Shockers went to work. Pereira flew through the No. 6 match against Salazar without giving up a game, 6-0, 6-0. Marinescu followed closely behind, notching the 6-1, 6-2 victory against Sobolta. Junior Adrian Chermaci sealed the win when he defeated Tansil, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 position.
Kasper finished Suslov at the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-2 right before Cavalcanti recorded the 6-3, 6-3 win at the hands of Beslic. Mihai was the only Shocker to give up a set, dropping the opening set against Trukshanin only to rally back and pick up the win, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 1-0 (4).
The Shockers are in action next when they hit the road to take on Texas-Arlington on Feb. 19.
