WICHITA, Kan.--The Wichita State women's basketball team defeated Savannah State, 67-41, Friday in front of 9,831 fans inside Charles Koch Arena for the annual School House Rocks with the Shocks game. Friday's attendance total marked the fourth-largest home crowd in Wichita State women's basketball history.
Breanna Dawkins, Morgan Boyd and Michelle Price each had 10 points for the Shockers. Savannah State's Darice Fountaine - a Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS graduate - was the game's leading scorer with 25 points.
Savannah State scored the first seven points and held the Shockers scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. A three-pointer by Morgan Boyd put the Shockers on the board at the 15:25 mark. The Shockers continued to build momentum, and tied the game at 11 with 12:39 to go in the first half. Another three-pointer from Boyd gave the Shockers a 14-11 lead over the Lady Tigers, a lead that the Shockers held the rest of the game.
Wichita State steadily built their lead in the second half, shooting 48% and out-rebounding SSU 20-11 after the break. Nine different Shockers scored in the second half.
This was the first meeting between the teams in school history.
The Shockers return to action Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. vs. UC Davis. It will be the 1,000th all-time game played by the WSU women's basketball program.
