WICHITA-Kan.- The
Wichita State Shockers beat the Chicago State Cougars, 91-51, in front of a
crowd of 10,206 at Charles Koch Arena Wednesday night.
The Shockers had three reach double figures, but were lead
by David Kyles who scored 15 points, going 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Demetric Williams shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe to score 14 points for
the Shockers and J.T. Durley put up 11 points along with four rebounds. Graham Hatch led WSU on the boards with
six rebounds.
Chicago State was led in scoring by Carl Montgomery who
scored 10 points. Haji Martin led
the Cougars with eight rebounds.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with baskets
from Durley and Aaron Ellis. A
diving steal from Hatch and a layup from Toure' Murry helped extend the Shocker
lead. Chicago State stopped the
run with a basket from Antonio Lofton, but the Shockers went on to score eight
unanswered points going into the first media break with 3-pointers from Hatch
and Kyles, and a jumper from Durley in the paint to put WSU up, 14-4.
Ben Smith extended the Shocker lead, 17-6, with a layup off
of a nice pass from Gabe Blair with 12:33 left in the first half. Demetric Williams followed that up with
a jumper from the elbow to put the Shocks ahead 19-6. A basket from Martin brought the Cougar deficit down to
11 with the Shocks up 19-8.
Durley pushed the Shocker lead out to 22-8 with a
3-pointer. A steal from Hatch lead
to a missed 3-pointer from Durley, but was followed up with a hustle play and
board by Hatch leading to two made free throws. The makes at the charity stripe from Hatch put the Shocks up, 25-10.
The Cougars went on a 7-0 run going into the eight-minute
media timeout off a 3-pointer from Victor Scott, a dunk from Montgomery, and jumper
from Martin. The unanswered points
cut the Shocker lead down to 29-20 with a little under six minutes left in the
half.
The Shockers ended the Cougars run coming out of a timeout with
a free throw from Ehimen Orukpe, and a jumper from Blair gave WSU another
double-digit lead, 32-20. A steal
and 3-pointer from Kyles gave the Shocks a 35-20 advantage.
With just four minutes left in the first half, Kyles' long
range 3-pointer gave the Shockers their first 20-point advantage of the game,
40-20. A nice cross-court bounce pass from Ragland to Williams extended the
Shocker lead. A Tyler Richardson
3-pointer and a dunk from Ellis closed out the first half for the
Shockers. WSU went into the break
with a 49-22 lead over the Cougars.
At the half, the Shockers were led by Kyles with nine points
and Hatch with seven points and five boards. The Cougars were led by Scott with five points and four
rebounds. Wichita State
outrebounded Chicago State in the first half, 24-15.
Wichita State paced out to an early 54-22 second half lead
off of a 3-pointer from Kyles and a rebound put-back from Durley. Kyles' fifth three of the game extended
the Shocker lead to, 57-22. Heading
into the first media timeout of the half, Montgomery stopped an 8-0 run by
Wichita State with a jumper in the paint, 57-24.
With 13:00 left the second half, the Shocks continued to
build on their 20-point lead with a 3-pointer from Smith. A Blair dunk gave Wichita State a
33-point advantage, and back-to-back layups from Ragland and Stutz put the
Shockers up, 70-33.
Layups from Williams, Ragland, and Durley gave Wichita State
its first 40-point advantage of the game, 76-35. The Shocks spent the rest of the second half continuing to
build on that lead.
With a little under six minutes to play in the game, Orupke
brought the crowd to their feet with a rebound put-back to put the Shockers up 83-43. Jerome Hamilton electrified Charles
Koch Arena with a fast break dunk with a little under four minutes left in the
game, 85-46. Derek Brown closed
out the second half with a 3-pointer for the Shockers.
Wichita State outrebounded Chicago State, 44-31, making the
Cougars the sixth opponent the Shockers have outrebounded this season.
The Shockers travel to San Diego, Calif., to take part in
the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge. The Shocks take on San Diego State on
Sat., Dec. 4 with tip-off set for 9:05 p.m. Central time.
