Wyoming took advantage of an off shooting night by the
Wichita State Women's Basketball team to defeat the Shockers 63-55 in the
championship game of the Holiday Inn Woodland Hills Thanksgiving Basketball
Classic, hosted by Cal State Northridge.
Freshman BreAnna Dawkins was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Dawkins scored a career-high 15 points for WSU, including a
clutch three-pointer with 2:08 to play which brought the Shockers within 56-55
after the team had trailed by as many as 12 in the second half. She also handed out four assists and
collected four steals in her first career start.
The three from Dawkins helped Wichita State make a game of
the final minutes but that basket turned out to be the final time the Shockers
put points on the scoreboard. Wyoming's
Chaundra Sewell converted a three-point play immediately after Dawkins' gem and
the Cowgirls converted all four free throw attempts in the final 30
seconds.
Hillary Carlson paced Wyoming with 18 points and nine
rebounds while adding three blocked shots.
Aubrey Vandiver, coming off a career-best 31 point output, added 13 with
seven boards and Bec Campigli scored all 14 of her points in the first half.
The Shockers raced out to their customary quick start,
out-scoring the Cowgirls 7-0 within the first minute of the game. However, the Shocks were out-scored 35-20 the
rest of the half and went into the break trailing by eight.
Wichita State never could get it going offensively, hitting
just 2-of-11 three-point attempts and shooting 37.3% for the game. The silver lining was a 90% shooting effort
from the free throw line (9-of-10).
Michelle Price nearly tallied a double-double with eight
points and a team-best 10 rebounds. She
also blocked two shots in 26 minutes.
Morgan Boyd scored eight points off the bench.
The Shockers return home Thursday to face Santa Clara with a
7:05 p.m. tip-off at Charles Koch Arena.
Notes: Only three
Shockers scored in double figures over the two games of the tournament... Price
has been knocking on the door of her first career double-double. She had eight points and 10 rebounds Saturday
night and is averaging 8.3 points and 9.3 rebounds over her last three games...
Thursday's game against Santa Clara marks the fourth straight contest the
Shockers have played against a school they are facing for the first time.
