Huskers Barely Edge Shocks, 4-3

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Shockers (1-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead on Friday but couldn't hold off the #55 Huskers (3-0) who rallied for the 4-3 victory at the Nebraska Tennis Complex.

Playing with a shortened roster, the Huskers were forced to surrender the No. 3 position doubles match to give WSU the automatic advantage. The Shockers did just that, picking up both doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto and senior Stephanie Dalmacio defeated Madeleine Geibert and Mary Weatherholt, 8-4. The senior duo of Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu took out Jennifer Holmberg and Wiveca Swarting in the No. 2 match, 8-3.

"I couldn't be more proud of the way our seniors have competed and led this team this opening weekend," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "Flor battled back and almost turned her match around today."

In her first match back after recovering from an injury #28 Budiharto fell to  Weatherholt, 6-1, 6-4 to tie the match, 1-1.

The Shockers reclaimed the lead with a win at No. 5 singles when Lazaroiu knocked off Abby Buxton easily, 6-0, 6-0. The Shockers stretched their lead to 3-1 after Dalmacio won at the No. 2 spot.

Sophomore Delia Damaschin fell at the No. 3 singles spot to Swarting, 6-4, 6-1 to narrow the gap, 3-2,  Hanisch battled in the No. 4 spot against Holmberg but fell, 6-3, 7-5 to tie the match. The deciding match was left up to brand new Shocker, Iasmine Carpen in the No. 6 singles match. She won the first set and battled in the next two, but was unable to come up with the win. Chelsea Finnegan pulled out the match and the Husker victory, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.

"It was a tough situation in Iasmine's second match for the team to come down to her court," Foster said. "She showed improvement and will continue to grow as she gains more experience. We're looking forward to competing against a solid Minnesota team tomorrow."

The Shockers wrap up their weekend against the #64 Golden Gophers on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
