SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Wichita State (12-6, 4-3) shot 55-percent in the second half to erase an eight-point deficit to force overtime where the Shockers took down Missouri State (12-6, 4-3), 92-85, Saturday afternoon inside JQH Arena.
Chynna Turner led the Shockers with 20 points while
Haleigh Lankster,
Jessica Diamond,
Morgan Boyd and
Jazimen Gordon reached double-figures.
Jaleshai Roberson led MSU with 23 points.
Neither team wasted time getting on the scoreboard to start the game. WSU pounded the ball inside early as
Chynna Turner fueled the offense with three buckets inside. The Bears extended a one-point lead with a 16-2 run that made it 23-10 with 11:36 before the break.
Jazimen Gordon's layup ended the four-minute scoring drought and started a 5-0 personal run for the freshman that included an old-fashioned 3-point play.
Haleigh Lankster grabbed an defensive rebound threw a long pass to
Morgan Boyd for a layup and a 7-3 Shocker run.
The Shockers picked up their defense, pressuring full-court and speeding up the Bears. A Lankster 3-pointer from the top of the key cut the deficit to three, 36-33, with 2:30 to play in the half. A 5-0 run from Garrison pushed the lead back up to eight and the Bears took a 43-35 lead to halftime.
Lankster and Turner led WSU at the break with 11 points each, while Garrison and Roberson led MSU with 11 points.
The Shockers shot 46-percent in the half but just 42-percent from the free-throw line, converting on three of their seven attempts. The Bears shot 54-percent in the half and held an advantage from behind the arc, hitting 5-of-7 from downtown.
WSU's 35 points were the most in a half since it scored 35 on Jan. 3 in a win against Bradley and the most it had scored in a half on the road all season.
The Shockers started to heat up from behind the arc to start the second half. Boyd got the momentum rolling in WSU's favor with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and WSU connected on its first five attempts from behind the arc.
Another 3-pointer by Boyd capped off a 20-7 Shocker run and gave WSU its first lead of the game, 65-62, with 8:17 to play. MSU fought back, however, and reclaimed the lead at the charity stripe but the Shockers answered each score.
WSU erased a four point MSU lead with baskets inside by Turner and Gordon but the Bears got a a three-point play and a Garrison layup, each with the shot-clock winding down, to take a five point lead.
Again the Shockers were not done, getting two free-throws from Lankster and a fastbreak layup by Turner to cut the lead to one, 78-77, with 43-seconds to play.
Boyd spot up and hit her third 3-pointer of the game to give WSU a 80-78 lead but Garrison drove the length of the floor and hit a jumper inside to tie the score with five seconds left. WSU had one last chance but Lankster's 3-pont attempt at the buzzer fell short, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame the Shockers came out firing again while for the first time all game, MSU struggled to score. WSU opened with an 8-0 run and held the Bears scoreless until Garrison hit a jumper with 1:37 to play.
Roberson cut the Shocker lead to three, but two free-throws from Lankster pushed the lead back to five, 90-85, with 16 seconds to play.
Marisah Henderson's fastbreak layup, her only basket of the game, sealed it for WSU, 92-85.
The win marks WSU first in Springfield since Jan. 7, 2007, and the first overtime win since an overtime win over Southern Illinois on Feb. 12, 2006.
The Shockers are back in action Thu., Jan 28 at Evansville. The game will be telivised live on Kansas 22 with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
