Diamond sparks Shocks past Sycamores, 65-61

WICHITA -- Wichita State freshman guard Jessica Diamond sparked the Shocker offense in the second half and guided her team back from a 20-point deficit and to a 65-61 win against Indiana State Thursday at Charles Koch Arena.

Diamond scored 11 points in a span of 4:52, including three 3-pointers, during a 13-3 run by the Shockers. She scored 13 of her 16 total points in the second half.

Shocker sophomore guard Haleigh Lankster led all scorers with 17 points and also had a team-leading six rebounds.

The Shockers scored the final 15 points of the game and held Indiana State scoreless for the final 5:32 of the game.

Wichita State took the lead for good on a jumper from Diamond with 2:01 remaining. Free throws from freshman forward Chynna Turner and Marisah Henderson down the stretch extended the Shockers' lead.

A crowd of 1,402 watched as the Shockers improved to 11-5 overall and to 3-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The win marked Shocker coach Jody Adams' first against Indiana State. Wichita State also improved to 9-1 at home this season.

Indiana State dropped its fifth-straight game and now holds a 9-6 record overall and 0-4 in the conference. Deja Mattox and Taylor Whitney each led the Sycamores with 13 points.

Wichita State started the game converting just 1-of-7 shots in the first four minutes. Meanwhile, Indiana State built up a 10-3 lead, fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Brittany Schoen in a 25-second span.

The Sycamores extended out to a 12-point lead on a 3-pointer from Kelsey Luna with 8:39 left in the first half, but the Shockers responded with a 6-1 run to eventually cut the deficit to seven points. Indiana State went on to build up its largest lead of the half, 30-17, with 2:26 on the clock before halftime.

The Shockers struggled shooting throughout the first half from the field and at the free-throw line, finishing 32.1 percent of their field goals and 40 percent at the free-throw line. Indiana State led 36-25 at halftime.

Lankster led the Shockers with nine points in the first half and four rebounds.

Indiana State boosted its lead to 20 points 5 minutes into the second half before the Shockers found their groove offensively. Wichita State finished the game shooting 43.4 percent and 60 percent from the free-throw line.

Wichita State next plays Illinois State at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at Charles Koch Arena.
