Shocks Get Road Win Over Sycamores, 84-73

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Behind a 26-point effort from senior guard Clevin Hannah the Wichita State University men's basketball team improved to 5-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference, 16-2 overall, following an 84-73 win over Indiana State.

The loss drops the Sycamores to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the Valley.

Hannah was 9-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from behind the arc to lead WSU.  Guard Toure' Murry had 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field while Graham Hatch added another 13 points for WSU.

Harry Marshall led all scorers with 29 points with Josh Crawford chipping in another 18 for ISU.

Gabe Blair, David Kyles and Garrett Stutz each had a team best five boards for Wichita State.

WSU went on a 5-0 run to start the contest and grew the margin to nine as a Stutz basket made the score 16-7.

The visiting team kept the Sycamores on the outside looking in until the seven minute mark in the first half as ISU chipped away at the WSU lead to make the score 24-20.  WSU responded and used a 9-4 swing to increase the gap to 10 (34-24) with 4:19 left in the first.

A Murry layup sandwiched between treys from Hatch and Hannah gave the Shockers 41 points at the break and a nine-point cushion.

Following a missed three-point attempt by ISU the Shockers stormed down the court with Hannah again igniting the offense with a jumper from just outside the paint to start the second half.

Wichita State did not score for the next three minutes but the Shocker defense continued to stymie the Sycamores as Indiana State was only able to put in a pair of buckets, keeping the Shockers ahead by seven (43-36).

A free-throw by Blair was followed by two baskets from Murry and JT Durley as WSU increased its lead to 48-39.  A brief run by the Sycamores closed the gap to five as Carl Richard and Marshall contributed to the attack.  Hannah was again the driving force for the Shocker offense as he poured in five points on a long ball and layup to make the score 55-47 just before the second media timeout.

The Shocker defense continued to thwart the Indiana State offensive attack as another 6-0 run by the visiting team kept the Sycamores at bay.  Hannah dropped in six more points in the final six minutes of the contest while Murry added five points.  ISU, forced to foul, saw Hannah and Aaron Ellis finish out the game sinking their attempts from the charity stripe, icing the win for WSU.

Durley had six points, three rebounds and four assists in the win.

WSU will stay on the road as they travel to Omaha, Neb., on Saturday, Jan. 16, for a conference battle with Creighton.  Tip-off is set for 4:05 p.m.
