Game One: Wichita State 5 ? Creighton 2
Junior first baseman Clint McKeever's two-run bomb highlighted a three-run fifth that put the Shockers ahead for good in game one.
Starter Charlie Lowell (6-2) threw five innings, allowing just one unearned run and six hits to notch the victory. The lefty struck out five and walked four. Creighton's Jonas Dufek (4-7) also threw five innings in game one, although with less success. The right-hander allowed four earned runs on six hits and struck out just two in his outing.
Right-handed reliever Remington Johnson picked up his first save of the season, throwing the last inning and a third in relief. Johnson surrendered just one hit and struck out four.
McKeever led the offense with a 2-for-4 day and three RBI. Junior second baseman Will Baez went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Bluejays got three, three-hit performances in game one. Second baseman Vincente Cafaro recorded one of them and collected the only RBI for Creighton.
Despite a pair of hits by the Bluejays in the top of the first, the Shocker defense denied them access to the plate. A one-out double by Cafaro looked as if the Bluejays were on their way to an early lead. Third baseman Chance Sossamon snagged a sharp groundball from Robbie Knight to hold him to a single, but attempted to throw Knight out at first. McKeever sent a shot back to Sossamon in time to gun down Cafaro's attempt to reach third to keep the Jays off the board.
The precise defense that kept the Bluejays away from the plate in innings one and two lapsed in the top of the third. Catcher Scott Thornburg was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Knight tagged a ground ball to second that appeared to set up the double play. Although the Shockers got the out at second, an errant throw to first allowed Thornburg to score, giving the Bluejays the 1-0 lead.
Creighton wouldn't have the same luxury in the following inning. Although the Jays loaded the bases with one out, Lowell coaxed a double play out of Thornburg to keep the game tight.
Thanking Lowell for his effort, the Shocks matched the Jays' run in their next at bat. Second baseman Will Baez led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. McKeever scored him when he smashed a double off the centerfield wall, knotting the score, 1-1.
Baez and McKeever joined forces again in the Shockers' next at bat. Shortstop Tyler Grimes drilled a double before moving to third on a groundout. With two outs, the duo went to work. Baez laced an infield single to short to score Grimes and McKeever jacked a homerun to center, scoring Baez for the second inning in a row to build a 4-1 lead.
Freshman lefty Bryan Flynn relieved Lowell in the top of the sixth and the Shockers welcomed him with another run in the following frame. Junior centerfielder Ryan Jones took a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single to right from rightfielder Ryan Engrav and scored on a long sacrifice fly from Sossamon, putting the Shockers ahead, 5-1.
Putting together their largest threat of the game, Creighton loaded the bases in the eighth using four singles and an error. With a stroke of luck and a big strikeout from reliever Remington Johnson, the Shockers escaped with only one run allowed to clinch the 5-2 victory.
Game Two: Wichita State 11 - Creighton 1
Creighton starter Greg Hellhake never made it out of the second inning as the Shockers' bats blazed through the final game of the series, raking 15 hits and 11 runs to run-rule the Bluejays, 11-1, and sweep the series.
Cooper (7-5) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, striking out five and walking two in his seven-inning complete game. The only hit the freshman hurler surrendered was a triple to T.J. Roemmich that eventually ended the shutout, as well.
Hellhake (5-3) gave up four runs on seven hits in his 1.1 inning start. He wasn't alone, however. As the Shocks outhit the Bluejays 15-1, it was evident that no Creighton pitcher found luck getting Shocker hitters out.
Jones led the way with a 3-for-3 performance, scoring twice and driving in one. Grimes followed suit with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate that included two doubles and a pair of RBI. Catcher Cody Lassley also put up a three hit show, pacing the red hot offense.
Wichita State jumped out to a smoking start and never cooled in the second game of the day. Lassley roped a double to the gap in left center to put a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the first. Baez followed him to the plate with a single before McKeever walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Engrav drove in Lassley. Jones' infield single brought Baez home and brought the Shockers a 2-0 lead.
Picking up where they left off, the Shocks got on the board again in the second. Sossamon, Grimes and Lassley tagged three singles in a row to stretch their lead, 3-0. Baez stepped up to drill his third hit of the day, a double to left, to drive in Grimes and chase Hellhake from the game trailing, 4-0.
Cooper continued to cruise despite trouble rising in the top of the fourth. Cafaro and Knight each took one for the team to lead off the inning and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Working without an out, Cooper struck out the next batter he faced and sat down the next two on line and ground outs.
In the meantime, the Shocker bats refused to cool. In the bottom of the fifth, Jones tagged his fourth hit of the day to start a scoring rally. Catcher Chris O'Brien reached on a fielder's choice before left fielder Bret Bascue singled through the right side to plate Jones and make way for Creighton's third pitcher of the game. The pitching change mattered little, however, as Grimes drove a two-run double to right field and pushed the Shocks' lead, 7-0.
Scorching hot, the Shockers piled runs onto their lead in the next inning. Reliever Bob Lackovic hit Baez with a pitch to start the inning. McKeever kept the offense rolling with a single to right. Trying to curb the dominant offense, the Jays chose to intentionally walk Jones to load the bases. O'Brien responded with a bases clearing double.
In the top of the seventh, Roemmich halted the excitement that spread throughout Eck Stadium as his leadoff triple broke up Cooper's no-hitter. A groundout to the right side of the infield scored Roemmich for Creighton's only run of the game.
The Shockers now face the No. 2 seed Indiana State in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Wichita State will begin tournament play on Wednesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
