WICHITA -- The Wichita State men's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches Tuesday with a 7-0 sweep of Washburn Thursday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
In order to ensure that the match was completed before the forecasted rain moved in, the singles competition was played first. Nationally ranked in the NCAA Div. 2 polls, the Ichabods proved to be a challenge for the Shockers, taking two of the six singles matches into a third set, but ultimately the Shockers prevailed. David Cavalcanti got things started with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Washburn's Drew Hanson in the No. 4 match. Adrian Chermaci followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Simon Blondin in the No. 2 match, while Matt Teivans earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Yann Kasay in the No. 5 match.
WSU's Vlad Marinescu secured the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Branden Joost in the No. 1 match. The Shockers earned supplemental wins from Jonathan Obrist and Michal Zawadzki in the Nos. 3 and 6 singles matches, respectively. Obrist used a third set to defeat Ryan Ward, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Zawadzki notched a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win over Adam Rens in the No. 6 match.
Thanks to increasing winds from thunderstorms that were building in the Wichita area, the doubles competition proved to be an interesting one. WSU's doubles tandem of Teivans and Scott McCormick cruised to an 8-2 win over the Ichabod duo of Hanson and Ward in the NO. 2 match. The Shockers' No. 1 team of Marinescu and Chermaci rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to defeat Washburn's Joost and Brad Johnston, 9-8 (5) in the No. 1 match, while Washburn's No. 3 team of Blondin and Kasay rallied from an identical 6-1 hole only to fall short, 8-7 (1-0) in a match that was declared over due to lightning.
With the win, the Shockers improve to 8-9 on the season. They will take Friday off before returning to the courts this weekend when Southern Illinois and Indiana State visit the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. Saturday's match with the Salukis is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
