Box Score WICHITA -
Josh Rosecrans posted his third three-hit game of the season as Wichita State defeated the University of Saint Mary, 7-2, Tuesday evening in front of 2,806 fans at Eck Stadium.
Rosecrans finished three-for-three at the plate and scored one run for the Shockers. He was the only Shocker with more than one hit in the win.
Mitch Caster extended his hitting streak with a third inning single, and has now recorded a hit in each of the last six games.
The Spires made the first move, taking an early 1-0 advantage in their first at bat when a Hogan Matson double allowed Dustin Smith to score after reaching on a throwing error by WSU's
Chris O'Brien. Saint Mary starter Tim Martin's off-speed pitching performance held the Shockers to just one hit through the first two innings of play and allowed the Spires to maintain their one-run edge.
Wichita State's bats woke up in the third. A
Bret Bascue single to left was the first of five-straight singles to open the inning. Solid base hits by
Josh Rosecrans and
Mitch Caster, followed by bunt singles by
Will Baez and
Taylor Brown allowed four Shockers to cross the plate.
Cody Lassley put a Bryson Merrick offering onto westbound 21st Street as the first batter in the fourth inning, and extended the Shocker lead to 5-1 after four complete innings.
Chris O'Brien broke in USM reliever Charlie Mildner three batters into the fifth inning. The Shocker freshman wasted no time getting ahold of a Mildner pitch and sending it over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season, and his first from the right-handed batter's box; a two-run shot that gave WSU a 7-1 edge heading into the sixth inning.
Facing new pitchers each inning, the Shockers were unable to get into a rhythm offensively, and were held scoreless through the rest of the game.
Unwilling to go down without a fight, the Spires took advantage of another Shocker error in the eighth and notched their second run of the game on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Reed that allowed Stephen Maurin to score after reaching base via
Taylor Gilmore's throwing error from third that produced the final five-run Shocker margin of victory.
Cameron Maldonado picked up his first decision of the season, and improves to 1-0 with the win. The redshirt freshman pitched six inning and gave up one unearned run on four hits and four strikeouts.
USM's Tim Martin was saddled with the loss and falls to 2-3. He was one of seven pitchers used by the Spires.
With the win, the Shockers improve to 17-11, while the Spires fall to 17-10-1. Wichita State is back in action Wednesday evening when the nationally-ranked Oklahoma Sooners visit Eck Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
